The Appeal of Fantasy by Hailey Edwards

The fantasy genre reminds me of Baskin-Robbins’ thirty-one original ice cream flavors. You could sample a different subgenre every day for a month and still end up with a few varieties you haven’t tried.

Most fantasy novels start with the same base, an idea for plot, characters, and setting that combine supernatural and/or magical elements.

The type of fantasy that springs to mind most often is epic or high fantasy. These stories are usually more serious in tone and involve epic struggles with a cast of familiar characters such as wizards, witches, dwarves, elves, and fairies. Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien is a good example and one most of us are familiar with due to the popularity of the recent film trilogy by the same name.

Another, more traditional, type of fantasy is dark or gothic fantasy. This subgenre combines fantasy and horror elements. The tone is dark and the subject matter is often not for the fainthearted. My favorite example is Anne Bishop’s Black Jewels Trilogy.

Urban fantasy is a newer, popular trend for those who like their books light on romance but heavy on action with a sprawling city backdrop. A good example of urban fantasy is The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.

Contemporary or modern-day fantasy, which is similar to urban fantasy minus the requisite cityscape, is my favorite subgenre to read and write. It combines modern times with supernatural elements, parallel planes of existence, or alternate worlds.

When fantasy takes over our imagination, anything is possible.

As you clip the leash on Fluffy for that last walk before bedtime, how often do you look up at the moon as you step outside? Do you check to see if it’s full? Is it reflex or conscious decision on your part?

When you reach the point where your house is more than a quick sprint away, does fear make your nape prickle and palms sweat? If you live near a wooded area, do you often scan the bushes for yellow eyes? Or, in your fantasy, are they red?

We love to read books that pull us out of our everyday lives and thrust us into extraordinary experiences. We long for the thrill of a quest, the tender stirrings of first love, adrenaline laced battles or the rush of making an incredible discovery.

Fantasy gives us all these things and more. It acts as a gateway to anywhere we want to go. It is a key to open fairy doors or castle keeps, enchanted padlocks or gateways into alternate universes. It tempts us into the woods at night only to send us screaming out again at the first sound of a twig snapping underfoot.

The power of fantasy is making your every dream come true, taking you on an exhilarating ride to where rules are made to be broken, and while good may not triumph over evil, it puts up one hell of a fight.

Growing The Popularity of Wolf Shape Shifter Novels

In the beginning…well it seemed appropriate to say- Werewolf novels and movies struck fear in readers and movie-goers alike. The horror of a half man- half wolf beast like creature killing and terrorizing people. Movies like the cult classic The Howling for instance, showed werewolves as evil creatures who tried to live in peace with man and failed. Werewolf in London, a seemingly humorous horror tale of a man who turns werewolf and goes on a blood thirsty killing spree. He then finds himself haunted by the ghosts of his victims. Silver Bullet, a novel and movie by Stephen King portrays another man who tries to cope with the beast and looses the battle when people start turning up dead. All of these yester-year stories have one thing in common; they portray werewolves in the horror sense.

In today’s novels and movies, the werewolves or wolf-shape shifters are portrayed differently. Most of the stories show these creatures as having human qualities or control. Authors are taking more of a turn with werewolves, much as the vampire writers are doing.

While the major buzz of the paranormal romance genre continues with vampires, werewolves have taking much of a backseat in this genre. Vampires are becoming romantic, despite their bloodlust and they have an appeal to audiences everywhere. Most of the appeal of the vampire comes from their seduction or erotic nature. They are very smooth and skilled when choosing their prey or victims. Luring them in a web of seduction, if you will.

Most readers have come to an understanding about vampires and the interest continues to grow. Especially with the new paranormal romances who portray the vampires as the good guys. So the popularity continues with vampires. The nocturnal creatures of the night thrive within the hearts of the readers.

But what about the werewolves? Is it possible to have a paranormal romance novel that is equally as compelling as a vampire novel? I think so.

Since much of the history behind werewolves and vampires relate back to myths. Many readers have been groomed to believe werewolves or shape shifters are not in control of their dark side. What if they were in complete control? Maybe all shape shifters don’t need the moon to change. Another aspect readers are seeing is that werewolves are bestial nature in even their human form. Could this be the reason why werewolves are not as popular as vampires?

The debate continues between vampires and werewolves. As funny as it may seem, this is a debate that has carried on for many years, long before the paranormal romance genre became popular. As it seems, vampires do carry most of the popularity.

The fight for werewolf romances continues. Many new books are now coming out with a different view of werewolves or shape shifters. These characters are portrayed with a smooth and sexy character and maybe a little rough around the edges. But in truth, werewolves/shape shifters can be very sexy and in control.

Think about it a moment; a tall dark and sexy wolf shape shifter. Smooth and defined, well balanced and mature. Someone with a voice that could sooth your wearied soul. A person with a deeply rooted nature of a wolf. A pack leader. A hunter. A man who would protect you even at the cost of his own death. My reader friends, this is the true nature of a wolf shape shifter.

Wolves were considered horrible creatures and much of a nuisance to farmers and cattle owners, in years past and even today. The stories and folklore told many tales of the dangers of werewolves as blood thirsty creatures. Most of these stories derived from the people starting these legendary tales of the dark. Remember : Fear strikes fear into the hearts of those who believe.

In reality, if one were to study wolves and their natural instinct they would find them very interesting. Wolves are pack animals. They stick together and even rejoice with one another over events. They share sadness throughout the packs. Wolves are very misunderstood creatures that live among us.

In my paranormal romance series Dark of kNight, I have included these characteristics in my wolf shape shifters. My series is new and different because I don’t portray the Lycans as evil creatures. I separate the Lycans (wolf shape shifters) and Werewolves. My shape-shifters are just like normal humans- so to speak. My goal was to create a novel series that was new and refreshing for readers who enjoy paranormal romances.

Story 4 of 5 Screams From the Backseat

This is a wonderful story of self discovery and love. The character Daniel is a strong, intelligent and sexy man that Julie has known her whole life. He has a very formal way of speaking, soft yet strong. It makes me want to sit down and listen to him tell about the history of the Lycans. Julie is a strong yet vulnerable woman. She wants to understand what is going on in her world. She come home to find that nothing is as it seemed. Their passion and love for one another is palpable.

The author writes with a youthful voice, but does not talk down to an older reader. It is obvious that the author loves what she does. Her characters are rich and vibrant.

I love the story, but I had some issues mainly with the editing. There were some areas that were hard to get through. The story itself, including the writing, was wonderful. My two biggest complaints are, first, the lack of enough back story. I want to know more about the characters that I have come to know. Second, the editing. There were several areas in which there were glaring stumbling blocks because of editorial errors.

With those things said, it did not stop me from reading the book. Would I read this author again? Yes. Would I purchase her work? Yes .

M. L. Lacy Has outdone herself with the second book in her Chrysalis series. Chrysalis Tribulations has far surpassed my expectations for this book, and my expectations were pretty darn high since I loved the first book as well. Unlike some books this one took me a bit longer to read, not because it was overly wordy or wrought with editorial mistakes, but because I DID NOT WANT THIS BOOK TO END!
Her characters have truly come to life in this story. Bree has become a compassionate, gentle yet strong leader in the clan. I have watched her progression from a timid, frightened "child" to a strong woman who is dealing with the fact she has one foot in both the magical and human worlds. It is amazing how she deals with all the information and situations that are thrown at her.

Bree's men love her and have faith in her, but tend to be overly protective. However, some of the women in her clan see her as a threat. Bree wants changes that scare some who do not like change. Madelyn thinks she should be the leader of the clan. But with leadership comes responsibility that she is in no way prepared for.

Steven is Bree's one true love. The passion these two share is explosive. Steven always wants to protect her, but he also needs to trust Bree's knowledge as a Chosen One. This is sometimes difficult for him as Bree is still mortal.

Now on to the writing. What makes an author worth reading? I ask myself several questions. 1) Can I hear the individual character's voices? 2) Do I care about the main characters? 3) Are the supporting players' voices also audible? 4) Can I put myself into the story? The answers to all of these questions are an emphatic "Yes!". The lengthy descriptive passages that were at times overly detailed in the first book, are now floridly descriptive and flow seamlessly. From the very outset, the reader is swept up and completely engaged and captivated by each of the characters. In short, if this story was an artist's canvass, it would be a masterpiece.

Medieval Werewolves with Author Sela Carsen

Stories of werewolves abound primarily in Europe and most of them are evil. No. Not just evil, but eeeeeeeeeevil. Malevolent witchcraft and grave mortal sin surround those who succumb to the wolf. For some, the change is involuntary, the result of a curse laid on them. For some, however, it’s a perfect cover for serial murder.

Not quite a werewolf tale because there’s no real hint of human transformation, the story of the Beast of Gévaudan tells of over 80 deaths in south-central France during the 18th century. The attacks are attributed to a monstrous wolf-like creature.

Seventh sons, sorcerers, drinking water from a wolf’s paw print, or wearing a belt made from a wolf’s hide are often noted as methods of becoming a werewolf. Also being a Christmas Eve baby in Russia, or certainly having parents who are werewolves will increase your chances of turning furry in the moonlight. Also, as with many curses, incurring the wrath of God, the saints, the Holy Roman Church, or even Satan himself could get you zapped. Being bitten by a werewolf is a modern-day fiction, rarely found in older, more traditional legends.

The one exception in the old tales where werewolves aren’t pure evil comes from a 1692 trial of an elderly Livonian man named Thiess. Almost all the references I’ve found to this story seem to be direct copies of the information on Wikipedia, so take it with a gigantic salt lick. Anyway, Thiess claimed that werewolves were actually the “Hounds of God” – warriors who went down into Hell and did battle with the Devil and his minions. When they died, they were welcomed into Heaven for their services. He got ten lashes from the Inquisition for idolatry and superstition.

Fiction of the time gives us something else. There are two medieval stories, both from around the same period, one French, one from Breton. The original story is probably Bisclavret, written by Marie de France in the 12th century, one of a dozen lais she wrote that were transformed into other tales. The Lay of Melion is Breton and relates to Arthur. In an earlier blog, I mentioned that Brittany has closer ties to Cornwall than France.

Bisclavret/Melion tells of a valiant and good knight who is married to a treacherous woman. The knight goes to hunt and the wife tricks him into revealing his secret. He’s actually a werewolf. From what I read, the stories don’t go into detail of how he became a lycanthrope. In Bisclavret, he needs to keep his clothing in a safe place or he can’t become human again. In Melion, there’s a magical ring that transforms him. As soon as the knight becomes a wolf and goes off to hunt, the wife steals the clothing (and in Melion, the ring, as well) and disappears. For years, then, the knight is condemned to wander as a beast of the forest.

Eventually, the king (Arthur, in Melion) goes out hunting and encounters this wolf. Melion/Bisclavret had been a friend of the king and goes to him in friendship. The king recognizes the strangeness of this and decides to keep the wolf as a companion. After some time, however, the estranged wife and her lover show up at the king’s court. The wolf goes mad, attacking the couple. In Bisclavret, he actually tears off her nose. The king, knowing that the wolf has never acted like this with anyone else, investigates and the evil-doers confess and tell where they’ve hidden the knight’s belongings. The wolf puts on his clothes and becomes human again. The wife and her lover are banished and in Bisclavret, all the wife’s children are born without noses.

The history of werewolves throughout the world is a gigantic study. Tales of lycanthropy differ from culture to culture and the modern version of werewolves differ significantly from the old horror stories. We’ve anthropomorphized them, made them more human and accessible. Indeed, we’ve made them heroes, but who can blame us? The ultimate alpha, that touch of animal lust. The shape shifter in all his forms is a romantic mystery we love to unravel.

Why We Read Weres

It is Wednesday so we are talking Weres. Today instead of having an author on I am looking at why we read Shifters and what Readers, Reviewers, and Authors have to say.

Author - Isobael Liu - I'm not sure if I can explain well enough the reasons for my like shifter books. I suppose it really depends on how well written the shifter books are. To be, the best shifter books aren't just that one of the characters (main or otherwise) are shape shifters, but they must also be at odds with their innate instincts. They must fight their predator side, show their predator side in their day to day lives, as well.

I like that tension in a story. Not only is he fighting against his instinct to take, to possess, the heroine, but he's also fighting the heroine in some way. Perhaps she's a hunter, or an animal biologist, someone who saw too much, or is on the run. In the end, she will come to understand why he fights himself, fears for her, and love him anyway, and he comes to love her for accepting him, for being the gentle side he needs, to balance him out.

As more and more paranormals creep into my "GOTTA read this" pile, I began to notice that I was usually drawn to the shifters in the stories. Why was that? After picking my brain and trying to figure out their appeal, here are my top few reasons that shifters rock my reading list.

Controlled Power - Something about a character who has super strength or special animal skills, but who can hold it back really impresses me. That they have a power lurking beneath the surface, ready to lash out at any time makes shifter books full of suspense.

It Could Be Anyone - The idea that literally any person could be a shifter makes these stories more realistic to me. Most shifters have a human form they take, and that's where the fun starts. Your handyman, mother, schoolteacher - any of them could be a shifter and you'd never know it. This lets my imagination run wild!

Basic Instincts - Who isn't interested in characters that answer the call of the wild and follow their own set of rules. Shifters live in society, but outside our rules. That goes for in the bedroom too. Makes for interesting reading.

Kick-Ass Ability - Ok, come on. You know you love shifters because they are bad-ass and can bust up anyone in their path. Whether it's because you love the fighting, or love that they are fighting over you, you love the action your shifters bring to the page.

Over the years there have been many paranormal romances and thrillers written containing werewolves. In past years, the term werewolves struck fear into the heart of anyone who heard the term. However, lately werewolves are used in another form as friendly and loveable. So how do we term the evil creatures from the good creatures? What is the difference?

In our discovery, let’s start with understanding some facts about wolves. Wolves have been very badly misunderstood animals over the last decade. They are important creatures to our eco system. Many farmers and live stock owners disagree, claiming they are a nuisance and should be destroyed. Truth is wolves are just as important to our world as the air we breathe.

Wolves are the largest member of the canine family, with a height from 26-32 inches. They weight from 55-130 lbs and have a life span of approximately 7-8 years. Some wolves have been known to live 10 years or more. The diet of wolves consists of large hoofed mammals, such as dear, elk, moose and caribou. I think you see why live stock owners would consider wolves a problem. In Alaska, there are an estimated 7000 to 11,200 wolves and more than 5,000 in the lower 48 states. In earlier times, there were estimated populations of up to 2 million wolves, where now there are only estimated 200,000 in 57 countries.

In the mid 1930s, wolves were once common creatures in North America and killed in most areas. Today their range has been reduced to minimal areas throughout the US and Canada.

The behaviors of wolves are mainly pack-like. They live, travel and hunt in packs of 4-7 animals. The packs include the mother and father, their pups and several other young wolves. The alpha female and male are the pack leaders that track and hunt prey. These leaders choose den sites and establish the pack’s territory. Wolves develop close relationships with one another and strong social bonds. They demonstrate deep affection for their family and may even sacrifice themselves to protect the family unit.

Werewolves are considered wolf-shape shifters by many. The name werewolf comes from the “wer” Old English term for man. Man-wolf. Legends around the world speak of men and women who could turn into wolves and back into human form. In their animal form, the werewolves were bloodthirsty creatures that devoured humans.

The werewolf legends occur in all parts of the world. Some scholars have suggested that these transformation legends are no more than echoes of ancient ceremonies where people wore animal skins.

An interesting note, European werewolf tales date back from ancient times. A Greek king named Lycaon was turned into a wolf as punishment for serving human flesh to the gods. The Greek word lukos(wolf) and anthropos(man) comes the term lycanthropy.

Now let’s discuss the difference between werewolves and Lycans. We know they pretty much mean the same thing- a man (or woman) who can turn into a wolf. Truthfully, they do not need the light of the full moon to change. They can change at will. So where do we form the opinions of bad and good werewolves? In Europe, the werewolf folklore is not just a simple myth or legend. There was a time where werewolf legends were rich and varied in stories. These stories were interesting as we begin to see tales about hero werewolves and a variety of species. So in fact, the werewolves in the older, darker days were considered blood-thirsty beasts. Which is probably where we come up with the evil looking, more scary creatures in the movies.

Another folklore, I would not want to pass up is the one I use in my Dark of kNight Series. My wolf- shape shifters are termed Lycans and they hunt evil werewolves. The background history on their characters is from the Native Indian’s folklore. Some facts about where the Native Indians came up with their legends were said to be based on early settlers. The early settlers brought with them their European beliefs and either retold old tales or created new ones. This statement or fact, I disagree with. The Native Indians are rich in their folklore, legends and beliefs. It is my belief that the Native Indians already had stories about wolf spirits, eagle spirits and shape-shifting long before the European settlers arrived.

If we would take the true nature of a wolf as a Lycan, then we would see a family who has a strong relationship, loving and would die for one another. The parents would be the forefront leaders of the pack and the children would learn from examples and discipline. Does this sound like an evil creature? Not really. This sounds more or less what we find in our paranormal romances or shape shifter novels. I think any woman who reads a story about a strong male, determined and confident wouldn’t swoon in his arms…werewolf or not.

The early descriptions of vampires that have come down to us through folklore, provide a stark contrast to today’s hunky, bare-chested bloodsuckers who no longer necessarily suck blood. It’s true that some of the old, scary vamps sometimes ran around shirtless (they might, for example, have escaped from their tombs clad only in a winding sheet), but in those cases they tended to show off discolored, cadaver-like rib cages rather than sculpted pecs and perfect six-pack abs. They also had terrible breath, bad skin, a hollow gaze, and a complete disregard for their human prey. Not exactly the stuff of sexy dreams.

Nowadays, in addition to having excellent hygiene, many vamps are also loathe to drink human blood, and those who aren’t rich (though most vampires are, probably thanks to earning centuries of compound interest) may work in life-saving professions like law enforcement or medicine. These new, sexy vamps move among humans (especially the heroine) almost the way the Greek gods were once thought to interact with their toga-clad subjects. Both alternately protect and seduce, throwing in a few punishments for the vain and wicked along the way.

As an ardent vampire fan and an avid reader and writer of vampire fiction, I couldn’t be happier with the current explosion of principled vamps. One thing does worry me, though. Now that the rehabilitation of the vampire from fearsome monster to ideal mate is complete, where do we go with the genre? I suspect that romance readers are already starting to get a little bored with detectives who use supersensory powers to solve crimes and avenging angels with archaic vocabularies. This might be why werewolf tales are starting to take up the shelf space formerly occupied by our favorite immortals.

One possibility might be a return to a traditional Gothic format, with tormented guys pacing the towers of possibly haunted manor houses. Another might be an even more extreme version of urban fantasy or steampunk, with futuristic settings and high-tech methods for the hero to slake his need for blood. There have been some rumblings about a line or two of Christian-centered vampire romances.

I doubt the vampire hero will ever devolve—Count Orlock, with his oversized bald pate and frighteningly long nails and teeth, just wouldn’t fit the bill in a romance novel. On the other hand, teen vamp dreamboats with pouty red lips and a passing resemblance to Elvis in the 1950s have already become the objects of parody (and cell phone commercials). The publishing industry will soon try to convince us that vampires are last year’s hot ticket, pushed out by shapeshifters and even zombies, but the truth is that they’ll be back on top—as soon as writers can find a new angle to sink our fanged friends’ lovely teeth into. That’s what immortality is all about.

This is the story of Aeryn, whose father was the wizard who helped Rowan’s evil half-brother Harper in The Dragon Lord of Kells. His treacherous employer and henchmen promptly kidnapped, raped and tortured Aeryn before her father could rescue her. Even though the last act of her father on his death-bed was to bond Aeryn to Angus (Rowan’s best friend and right hand) as Angus’ wife, her terror of what she had learned that a man could do to her caused her to flee to her father’s estate.

Set in Ireland in one year after the story in Dragon Lord of Kells, Ancestors of Fire focuses more on the immortal realm and the search for the one true king. Unfortunately, there is a demon who has stolen the Circle of Light that is necessary to proclaim the King and he plans to become the new ruler of both the mortal and immortal realms.

As with the first book in “The Empowered Spirits Series”, there is a taste of Tolkein’s Middle Earth in this story of a prophesied quest that must be taken by the house of Dravon and of Talyn. Ayren, daughter of Talyn, goes in search of Dravon and learns that he is none other than her bonded husband, Angus and they must share the quest to destroy the demon and return the Circle of Light.

This story depends heavily on the reader having already read Book 1 and is not a stand-alone book. That said, the reader gets to be reacquainted with some of the great characters from The Dragon Lord of Kells and to learn much more about both Aeryn’s and Angus’s mysterious heritages, hinted at in the first book.

I really liked reading about the strong characters in this book. Even the evil demon garnered a little bit of my sympathy at times, as you will see. There are some unexpected twists and turns in the story and a grand revelation at the end that makes this a truly enjoyable read.

Not as graphic as Book 1, I would recommend this book to Adults and mature teens.

Anyone who loves Tolkein’s Middle Earth will find themselves in somewhat familiar territory when reading this first book of a new series. You find elves, orcs, wizards and other middle earth dwellers as well as a few new races, like the Dragon Lords, shape shifters, healer-witches and stalkers. That’s where the similarity ends, however. This is more like Middle Earth grown up.

Set in Ireland in the 11^th century, Dragon Lord of Kells incorporates much of Irish lore in this love story of a Dragon Lord searching for his dragon magic and a young half-blood elf searching for love, acceptance and a home. Together, they face a ruthless enemy who wants nothing more than Rowan dead and Kira in his clutches and he will use any magic, curse or evil alliance to get what he wants.

I found myself caught up in the story and wondering what was going to happen next. For all Kira’s training and special abilities in fighting, however, she kept getting in situations where she is totally helpless. I would have appreciated it if she could have helped herself a little more and not have to be rescued by someone else quite as often. However, I really liked the story and am looking forward to Book 2.

One note. Although the basic story is readable by teens, this book contains some explicit sex, bondage and S&M, so I recommend Adults Only.

LORD RUTHVEN’S LEGACY By Cassandra Pierce

Last weekend, my friend Rachael and I went on a book-hunting safari at two of the larger chain bookstores, which happily are less than a mile apart in our area. In each of them, we observed the same pattern: at one end were the scary vampire books, with creepy titles and covers that could give anyone nightmares. On the opposite side were the romance novels, featuring handsome guys whose piercing eyes and thick dark hair might inspire a different, and much more pleasing, kind of dream.

The covers of these books reflect the (probable) culmination of a literary trend that’s been in progress since 1819. The original sexy vampire was modeled on none other than Lord Byron, whose personal physician John Polidori created Lord Ruthven for his story “The Vampyre.” Though he didn’t sparkle or pretend to be a high school student, Ruthven was a great hit with the fictional ladies of his Regency social circle. Unfortunately, those who fell under his spell (which included the story’s male protagonist) tended to end up dead.

In this respect, Ruthven would not have made an acceptable romance hero; the required happy ending could never come to pass. I suspect it is the Ruthven model people are thinking of (whether they know the character’s name or not) when they complain that today’s romantic vampire leads have become, in the words of another friend of mine, “emasculated.” Personally, I don’t find anything intrinsically “masculine” about killing, and alpha males seem to be plentiful enough in the vampire dating pool.

On the other hand, I do like a vampire hero with a bit of a sinister streak. No modern heroine would put up with Ruthven or Dracula as a mate (though apparently Bela Lugosi was deluged with fan mail from smitten women when Dracula was released in 1931), but as a reader I’ve become bored with novels in which the vampire hero is sweet, gentle, morally beyond reproach, and just all-around perfect. Vampires become indistinguishable from superheroes without a dark side and maybe a regrettable secret or two. I’ve never seen a romance featuring a caped crusader (though I don’t discount the possibility of someone trying one eventually)—to me, it seems that a story like that wouldn’t provide enough internal conflict or tension to make the novel interesting.

Romance is all about internal conflict and not external action, and maybe that’s the real difference between the traditional “horror story” featuring vampires and softer tales of vampires in love. It’s up to the fanged dreamboat in question to choose the right path, even when his base nature screams out for him to do otherwise. In my opinion, that’s about as appealingly masculine as a hero can get.

What is there to say about them?

They are strong, highly adaptable felines. One of the four large cats that walk they earth, they are easily recognizable by their deep russet orange color and black stripes.

Their powerful muscles bunch when getting ready to spring and they can take down their prey in one swipe of a massive paw. They can go it alone or in a group. However, they are natural born leaders.

According to Chinese Astrology, this year is the year of the Tiger.

Tigers are extremely charming and fun to be around. However they are super focused on their own ambitions.

They will fight tooth and nail if the cause is good. Super hotties with raw sex appeal. (I know I want my hero to be one. I can already hear the growl rumbling in his chest. It all depends on which spot I choose to stroke to make him purr. Meow!)

I'm sure that many will agree with me, when I say that tigers are the most intense of the other signs. You might want to take them in moderation only because they have excellent ways of channeling their energy. If they haven't quite mastered this feat, I would give a word of caution. Tigers have fast mood swings so intensity comes with the package. If you don't know what to expect, hold on and enjoy the ride.

The Stubborn Ox by Penelope Marzec

According to the Chinese Zodiac. I was born in the year of the Ox. I never liked that designation. An ox does not strike me as beautiful or graceful—and I would so much rather be compared with a more attractive animal. I think of the Ox as big and strong so that it can pull a lot of weight but maybe that’s not a bad thing for an author to be.

As an Ox I am supposed to be endowed with certain traits. One is stubbornness. For an author, I believe stubbornness is not a negative attribute. It can be a good thing because it takes persistence and determination to become published. My stack of rejections proves exactly how determined I have been in my goal. Without my single-minded dedication, I would have given up early on. Yes, the first rejection was the hardest, and every rejection still stings a little, but none of them ever swayed me from believing I could tell a good story.

An Ox is also supposed to possess an excellent memory. This is extremely useful for an author. I never know when some quirky fact in the back of my mind will lead to a wonderful plot twist.

Oxen are supposed to be methodical and reliable. Those characteristics have gotten me through the dreaded edits of my books.

Still, some of the characteristics ascribed to the Ox do not seem to fit my personality. I read one guide that claimed a good career choice for an Ox would be as a horticulturist. I have a sister who is a horticulturist. She gives me plants she knows I am unlikely to kill—plants that need little sunlight and water or perennials that are much like weeds.

In addition, an Ox is supposed to be most compatible with a rat, snake, or rooster. I married a sheep, which according to Chinese astrology, I should never have married. In fact, one guide claimed that we are mortal enemies. Hubby and I can only laugh about that. We celebrated out thirty-third anniversary. But perhaps, that is because an Ox is loyal and makes an affectionate, faithful partner.

For the coming year, I guess I’ll just keep plodding ahead in my ox-like way. According to Chinese astrology, I might have a bit of good fortune in the coming year because the Tiger brings luck to everyone, but I might have to face some challenges. However, since I’m big, strong, and stubborn that shouldn’t be a problem. I can pull my own weight.

Wolves vs. Weres by Heather Kuehl

When I started writing about werewolves (or Weres as I like to call them), I had to do a bit of research. Not a lot since I was writing about a creature that didn’t exist, but enough to have an understanding of wolves. I wanted my Weres to live a life that was a mixture of both human and wolf societies.

Firstly, I started with the physical attributes of wolves. In general wolves weigh anywhere between 55lbs and 170lbs and are between 24 to 34 inches in height, depending on what part of the world you are in. Were’s, on the other hand, tend to weigh more than that, since their human weight can’t just vanish into nothing. In other words, if Sarah weighs 120lbs as a human, that will be her weight when she shifts into a Were. They are also taller too, usually at 4ft or more. Like I said earlier, it depends on their human form. I kept the coloring of my Were’s fur true to nature, because no one would ever take a canary yellow Were seriously (at least, I wouldn’t).

Unlike wolves, my Weres mate for life and it can be outside their species. Were and human. Were and witch. Werewolf and Weresquirrel. Just like with human genetics, a child born of two different supernatural species will either become one or the other, not both (although there have been rare occurances of that happening). Gestation for wolves last around 60 days while gestation for Weres is around 25 weeks. Humans would start suspecting things if people started having babies within two months of getting pregnant. The point is to blend in. 25 weeks doesn’t draw suspicion, especially if the pregnant Were goes through with a homebirth.

Just like with real wolves my Weres have a pack mentality, except I call the Were groups Clans instead of packs. Wolf packs can contain up to 20 members, while Were Clans can support upwards of 90. The strongest fight their way up until they become the Alpha wolf. Sometimes a family can keep Alpha status for generations, other times they can’t. The Clan name is always the surname of the current Alpha. And, just like with wolf packs, Clans will also have the scapegoat, or Omega, of the pack. The size of the Were’s territory is determined by the size of its Clan. A 10 member Clans doesn’t need as much room as a 70 member Clan.

When a Were Clan gets low in numbers, other Clans will come in trying to assimilate them. The invading Clan will kill off the Alpha and any dominate males to obtain the remaining members and their land. In reality, wolf packs rarely take in strangers and packs would encroach on another pack’s territory only if the boundary that had been set up from scent marking and howling was disrupted in some way.

Luckily, Weres have a human form that they can revert to. Wolves do not and it is because of their natural form that they are hunted in many parts of the world. One day there might not be any more wild wolves, only those in captivity. Hopefully we can find a way to reintroduce these beautiful creatures into the wild that will make both them and the human opponents happy.

I feel in love. I am a sucker for "they have loved each other forever" type stories. He loves her and she loves him, but they are held apart for years. It always pulls on my heart strings. Which is the effect this story by Crymsyn Hart had on me, though even better since there is the added tension of this being a story told in the first person. We can not be sure Elijah returns her feelings, big bad immortal vampire that he is.

When you are the human in on Top Secret immortal info there always tends to be danger. In this case a fanatical preacher out to control our heroine's nifty telekinetic powers. I think if I could make things come to me I might become an even bigger slacker. Hence why I was granted other super powers.

So vampires fun, a pining for love, and some hot romantic tension make this book a great read. As has often been my complaint, there needed to be more. The ending rushed together a bit too fast compared with the pacing of the rest of the book. I definitely want to read more of this authors work. I actually really hope Kaylynn and Elijah pop up in a sequel. There was a side character in there who calls out for her own story.

I Married a Dog by Michelle Polaris

I married a dog. But that’s okay, I’m one too. No, I’m not talking about my or my dearest hubby’s looks or any habit of straying from the marital farmyard. And I’m not talking about the unflattering propensity I have to turn into a bitch once a month when hormonal. I’m talking Chinese astrological signs. I married a man born the same year as me and between the two of us we pretty much cover the bases of solid dog attributes.

The Chinese New Year just happened, falling on Valentine’s Day this time around. Accordingly, I thought it appropriate to discuss the love between two dogs. Dogs aren’t particularly sexy animals, so my astrological sign doesn’t tickle the erotic romance author in me who thinks being a dragon or a tiger sounds much more tantalizing. Although Charlaine Harris has that sexy shifter Sam in her Sookie Stackhouse vampire stories who turns into a dog as his other form. He manages to be solid and dependable (hence doglike) as well as sexy. So maybe there’s hope.

What traits are we dogs supposed to embody? Loyalty—check on both our parts. Faithfulness—check as well. Honesty—double check. Dogs are unpretentious—double check for me as well as hubby. (I buy maybe one pair of shoes a year and wear them until they disintegrate. Same for clothes. I love hand me downs even though I’m a grown-up. My husband would wear scraps of cloth if I’d let him. Neither of us has interest in classy or racy cars. And my husband would rather trade down than up as far as our homestead is concerned, buying a boat and living on it year round if he had his preference. There’s no such thing as keeping up with the Joneses in our household.) Dogs can sometimes be shy at social gatherings and are often perceived as being cold or distant at these events. (Really, it’s just shyness. We’re not judging anyone else.) This is a definite yes for my husband and usually true for me as well. Dogs tend to be good listeners. (Okay, check for me but not my husband. Sorry dear.) Gregarious personalities love us because we’ll just sit and absorb their blather.

Dogs are born worriers—double check. Give me a subject and I’m more than happy to find a way to worry about it. Thankfully, this is getting less pronounced in my old age. My husband is a quieter worrier, but just as bad. He doesn’t always know he’s doing it. But because of that worry dogs can sometimes bark and bite at those around them—check for me (blushing with shame).

My hubby fits the characteristic of becoming highly critical of others who do not share his same highly developed sense of honor and duty. But no matter how judgmental with loved ones who raise his dander, he always remains devoted—a big time dog trait. Dogs guard against the wrongs of society and can be relied upon to speak up for the disenfranchised and downtrodden. I like to imagine that this mindset led me to choose my other non-writing career of social work. I write about bigotry and injustice in a number of my stories as well.

Another reference calls dogs selfish, terribly stubborn and eccentric. In parts this fits both me and my husband. But it’s all about context, right? Dogs care little for wealth—check, but somehow manage to have money. That’s the resourcefulness. Well, we’re not rolling in it, but I can report we have everything we truly need in life. Another Wikipedia reference tells me our element is earth, our color is turquoise and our gemstone diamond. Oh, and our lucky number is nine. (Better go play the lottery.) Our allies are the tiger and horse and our foes the dragon. (Damn, they’re so sexy).

Not only do I and my husband share the sign of the dog, but we were born on each other’s exact half birthdays, making us the opposite western zodiac signs, both of which are fairly solid, dependable types.

All I can say is the marriage works. When two worrying, introverted, stubborn, pessimistic, cynical people live together, they keep it going with their very reliable, persistent, resourceful, honest, loyal and amicable natures. It’s like the human version of a building’s cornerstone. We’re sunk deep into the mud with each other. Solid, lasting, true. I love my husband—that dog.

Werewolves, the Hunky Heroic Kind By Terry Spear

In the beginning, werewolves were beasties. The idea any woman in her right mind would want to have one for a partner forever more was unthinkable. The werewolf guy would change without any choice when the full moon appeared. He’d lose any human thought and become a wild beast of prey. He wouldn’t care what he ate or killed. He just had the uncontrollable urge to do so.

In some stories, wolfbane might keep him from turning. In others, it would cause the shift. In yet others, it would kill the wolf. So it depends on the story you’re reading.

I’ve never used wolfbane in my stories. Maybe because of all the confusion as to what it might do to a werewolf. I try to keep my stories as realistic as possible. Why would wolfbane have any of the above effects on a werewolf? Now what if it were foxglove or oleander? Both are poisonous plants if ingested. But for anyone. Not just werewolves.

So let’s take another werewolf legend. Silver kills werewolves. Yes! I totally agree. And in Legend of the White Wolf, I explain why. My son and I were eating at a restaurant, and I mentioned to him how I wanted to do more research on silver, so he pulled out his phone and began looking up information on the Internet. I was jotting down notes on a napkin, excited about a new direction for my story, while he was reading off the information to me. Then the beef fajitas came and *sigh,* I was pulled away from my love of all things wolf.

I loved Miracle on 34^th Street. Is Santa Claus real? Of course. The U.S. Post Office proved it by collecting thousands of letters for Santa Claus. What about werewolves? What proof is there that they exist?

Werewolf trials existed centuries ago, proving that some people were truly werewolves. So even if the majority of folks don’t believe, some did. What about Bigfoot, or the Loch Ness monster? Believers actually search for them, sightings reported, why not werewolves?

Well, in Legend of the White Wolf, some do believe in werewolves, and it’s not a good thing for the werewolf pack in the area.

Although the original concept for werewolves was that they turned into a hideous kind of beast, not a handsome wolf, in mine, I couldn’t see a woman wanting a man who looked so beastly when he was in his wolf skin. Plus, how could people not see something so different from a real wolf whenever werewolves shifted into their wolf forms? So mine are wolves, just like real ones, except they have a human conscience and when in their human forms, they still have their wolf senses. But more than that, they have the wolf pack mentality—the desire to protect their mate and pack members, to commit for a lifetime, and to cherish their offspring. They’re beautiful as wolves, and hunks as humans. What more could you ask for in a wolfish kind of guy?
